Looking away.

This photo makes me very happy. I could spend a long time looking at it even though everyone is looking away. I want to figure out what I like about so I can recreate it in the future.

it's a very compelling image. the way the light sort of vignettes around the edges, fading to dark. but not really, when you really start to inspect it. at first it seems like a lens-thing, but i guess it was the lighting instead. also the gradation with the depth-of-field, it's like a stair-step from the little baby being sharp and clear. then the woman holding her (mom?) is a bit softer, and the man in back (grandpa?) is even softer. but he's not so soft that his features are indistinguishable. also it seems very candid, and happy, and warm. all of these things combine to make the image a good one to look at. i could look at it for ages, too. it's nice.

I agree with rox, it's all about the focus and depth of field. My poor little toy digicam just can't do that. *sigh* Of course, it does fit in my pocket (and, yes, I'm happy to see you).
